Ormond Beach is a city located in Volusia County, Florida.
As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 36,301. As of
2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 37,929
History
The city is named for James Ormond I, an Anglo-Irish-Scotch sea captain.
James Ormond held a commission from King Ferdinand VII of Spain to bring
settlers to this part of Florida. He worked for the Scottish Indian trade
company of Panton,Leslie and company. His ship was the armed brig
Somerset. The city was founded in 1875 under the name New Britain, and
incorporated in 1880 (at this time it was renamed Ormond; the word
"Beach" was added in 1949). The Ormond Hotel, once a well-known
local landmark, was built in 1888 and was demolished in 1992. The
Casements is now the town's best known historical structure. It was the
winter home of John D. Rockefeller during the latter part of his life,
and now serves as the town's cultural center.
