Lake City is located in the North Central area of Florida, about 40 miles down from the Georgia line. It's about 60 miles to the beach east or west.
Lake City and Columbia County, Florida are known as "The Gateway to Florida" because Interstate 75 runs though them, carrying a large percentage of Florida's tourist and trade traffic, and Lake City is the northernmost sizable town/city in Florida on Interstate 75.

Lake City is a pleasant town located approximately 40 miles down from the
Georgia State line in northeast Florida. It is the county seat for
Columbia County and is situated west of Jacksonville near the Suwannee
River. Lake City is centrally located about sixty miles to either coast
and bills itself as the “Florida’s New Gateway.” It has a friendly,
small town atmosphere where folks still wave to strangers as they pass
by. Quiet, tree-lined streets and beautiful residential areas surround
this small town. Most business is done on a first name basis. One of the
most well known attractions in Lake City is the “Florida Sports Hall of
Fame & Museum.” Conveniently located near the intersections of
Interstates 10 and 75, this museum features sports history and
memorabilia on display from members such as Chris Evert, Arnold Palmer
and Ted Williams. Guided tours are available. There is also a Florida
Tourist Welcome Center here, with free samples of orange juice and a baby
alligator to meet. Lake City makes a nice introduction to the state,
either as a stop along the way to other attractions, or as a peaceful
base town for your Florida vacation.
